It’s easy to feel stupid when you don’t know your nemesis is talking fashion (and you thought she was speaking Russian). Here’s your perfect cheat sheet to get out of such a situation. So here I present to you 10 fashion terms you must know!

  1. Appliqué

It is a technique of creating surface decoration by stitching or pasting motifs or any other fabric, trimmings on the ground fabric. This season lip appliqués are in vogue. Further, celebrities like Lady Gaga, Jessie J swear by it.

  1. Mary Janes

No, I’m not talking about the cocktail Mary Jane but Mary Jane shoes. These are shoes styled after school going children’s shoes. The main highlight of this shoe is the strap over the top of the foot. These days, these can be of any heel height.

  1. Bandeau

This is a strapless bodice made from stretch fabric. It can even be used as a hair band or just to accessorize your clothes.

  1. Gaucho

These are wide legged pants reaching mid calf and are mostly worn with boots. Also known to be very comfortable, these are perfect if you want to go for a retro look.

  1. Outré

This means something that is grossly overdone or exaggerated. For example, Her shimmery dress is so outré

6. Décolleté
It refers to a deep neckline that reveals the neck, shoulders and of course, cleavage.

7. Espadrille Sole

It is a flexible sole made completely out of some synthetic material or at times, jute rope. It is usually coupled with a wedge heel.

8. Louise Heel 

This heel in the list is named after Louis XIV of France. In this method, the sole and heel are made in one single section.

9. Minaudière

A minaudière is a women’s fashion accessory, generally considered a jewelry piece, intended to substitute for an evening bag.

10. Anorak
It’s a hooded sports jacket designed for extreme weather conditions which explains why is also known as a Parka, Windbreaker or Windcheater. Like this one from Amazon.
