We’ve all heard it ever since we were little kids. We were taught that money is not everything. Money can never buy happiness but guess what? As it turns out it can and not in the materialistic having enough to jetset around the world without a care in the world sort of a way.
I’m not talking about money that’s very ugly and in your face and just an obscene showcase of wealth.
I’m talking about having money in a way that makes your life and the lives of those around you better. Now think about it: we are all grown-ups living our lives trying to build something greater while also holding onto a family and relationships as we knew.
And as someone who lives abroad, to me it could be something that allows me to send a birthday cake to a sibling or a gift to a parent or that shagun ka lifafa to one of my relatives and having money makes all of that possible.
So when an adult tells you that ‘you know what money is not everything’ you tell them to their face that what they’re saying is wrong because if I did not have money, I would not be able to do all of those things and more.
And you know what would happen? It would affect my relationships to a great extent.
Just think about how our lives are built around certain festivals and occasions and if you can’t give that gift, that amount of money… the other person is always going to hold it against you.
That money that cake you bought cost you money. That piece of clothing you bought cost you money. That watch cost you money. And guess what? They brought happiness to all of those that I gifted it to and it gave me happiness.
I mean just imagine if your sister and your brother doesn’t gift you anything for rakhi or you’re a child and your parents did not give you anything for an occasion, you would be upset.
But having the ability to give those little things to each other, that’s what being financially secure makes it possible for you.
So the next time when someone tells you that money does not buy your happiness you can tell them that it’s a bunch of bull. It affords you the independence to make your own choices and not simply be a prisoner of your circumstances.
